The media resonance of the 'Tractors Protest' awakens urgent questions in the public opinion about the future of agriculture and the food it produces. It will be discussed on May 11, 2024 in Reggio Emilia, at the event 'Sow to nourish. The food I would like', organized by YourEvolution.
Threats from field to table
Lawyer Dario Dongo, founder of GIFT – Great Italian Food Trade and candidate in the 2024 European Elections in the North-East Constituency with the movement #PeaceLandDignity – opens the event with an in-depth look at the threats posed in Europe to agriculture and food production.
The issues to represent In Strasbourg, described in Dario Dongo's political program, cover (among others) every aspect of the supply chain from the agricultural field to the table:
– fair price,
– protection of family and peasant farming,
– agroecology,
– soil protection,
– consumer information,
– modulation of free trade agreements on foodstuffs.
New and old GMOs
The consequences of deregulating new GMOs advanced in the EU are easily predictable by looking at the trajectory of the 'old' GMOs. Beyond health concerns, the oppressive model of agriculture patented by a few multinationals capable of choking peasant agriculture and every form different from industrial agriculture reappears.
The in-depth study on old and new GMOs is entrusted to Giovanni Caccialupi, researcher at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Which agriculture, which food
Soil impoverishment, the devastating effects of intensive farming and the spreading of synthetic pesticides are enemies of long-term survival, but also of productivity, as demonstrated by a recent INRAE study.
Which agricultural practices need to be protected to cultivate and feed according to environmental and social sustainability logics is the topic illustrated Giorgio Bonacini, biodynamic farmer at the Il Grifo farm.
The strength of local realities
The meeting concludes with Tiziana Alterio, investigative journalist and writer, who illustrates the strength of local realities.
The event is open to all. Appointment Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 3 PM, at the conference room of Mercure Astoria in Reggio Emilia, at Viale Leopoldo Nobili 2. Updates on the page https://fb.me/e/1V52VGPKx.
