Seven rules for choosing a quality food

A feeling of indifference and powerlessness regarding the ability to choose quality food is often the harmful result of a lack of knowledge about the origin of what we eat.

To fill this gap and transform grocery shopping into a 'revolutionary' act, three technicians, agronomists and food technologists, all professionals and teachers, have condensed seven rules for choosing quality food into a publication.

Choosing quality food is a revolutionary act

‘If "eating is an agricultural act" (Wendell Berry), choosing food is a revolutionary act, because our food choices have the power to change the world. And this is a fact, pure truth.

If I choose one vegetable and forget another, I will bring the latter to extinction (including those who cultivate it), if I choose a food model, I guide cultivation, breeding, and production systems', write the authors of the publication, Donato Ferrucci, Nicolò Passeri and Patrizia Salusti.

Dazed by advertising and claim, made wary by bad information, 'passive consumers' hurriedly buy what they have been convinced to desire, without asking any critical questions about the quality and cost of what they put in the shopping cart.

The seven rules of the consumActor

To regain awareness in food purchases, the three experts indicate seven rules, accompanied by extensive reflections and instructions:

1 – Read the label

2 – Interpret what we have read

3 – Is it a quality product?

4 – Can I trust it?

5 – Do I like it? Is it good?

6 – Does the price seem fair to me?

7 – Am I satisfied?

Pills of cost-saving technicalities

Supporting the information which reveal the seven rules, the authors conclude the publication with valuable information little known to consumers, such as

– some food product denominations that must have precise characteristics,

– the mandatory information to be provided to the consumer, with some practical examples,

– explanatory sheets on objectives and guarantees offered by various quality systems (organic, geographical indications, National Quality System Livestock Production, etc.).

The publication is available attached, at the price of ‘7 acts of kindness within the next 15 days‘.
