Coffee against dementiaThe thesis, already known in the literature, that drinking coffee helps reduce the risk of cognitive decline, has been confirmed by a study published in The Journals of Gerontology, during which the effects of consumption daily consumption of caffeine-containing beverages on cognitive function decline in elderly women.
Examining for 10 years the relationship between cognitive conditions and coffee consumption in 6,467 women, of whom 388 were diagnosed with probable dementias, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee found that coffee consumption above average (261 mg/day) is associated with a reduced incidence of functional decline, compared to lower consumption (less than 64 mg/day). All this, controlling for other contributing factors: age, race, education, body mass index (BMI), cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, smoking and alcohol habits.
The beneficial action of coffee against dementia would be due to the role of the substance as a non-selective antagonist of the adenosine receptor, already present with a consumption of two to four cups daily. Currently, about 725 million cups of coffee are consumed in Europe, equivalent to 2.5 million tons of powder, 4 kilos per inhabitant.
