AIC, the Italian Celiac Association
L‘Italian Celiac Association It was founded in 1979 by a group of parents dealing with the first cases of celiac disease. The poor knowledge of the disease dictated their primary need: to understand exactly what it was, how to diagnose it, how to manage a gluten-free diet, and where to find safe foods.
After over 30 years of activity and a great contribution to the protection of celiacs, the Italian Celiac Association has about 65,000 members. Today its primary objective is to obtain greater guarantees in the administration of gluten-free foods in out-of-home consumption occasions, to ensure a normal life for celiacs in every context, whether at home, on vacation, at work, or anywhere else in daily life. It fights, in fact, against the “medicalization” of the disease.
The timeliness of diagnosis is very important. Considering that in Italy it is estimated that one person out of 100 is gluten intolerant, the 150,000 confirmed diagnoses represent only the tip of the iceberg. Thanks also to AIC, however, the disease research has improved. And new diagnoses increase by 10% annually.
