What agriculture to feed the planet sustainably? The topic is at the center of the international conference promoted by Legambiente onlus, in collaboration with the Scientific Committee for Expo 2015 of the Municipality of Milan.
The event – “The land we want. What agriculture to feed the planet” – is the opportunity for a discussion on the future of agriculture, destined to regain a central role in meeting collective needs. Due to climate change and the crisis of the oil-based development model, agriculture is called to provide food, but also energy and materials for chemistry and industry.
The promise of organic
To combine this effort with environmental and social protection, the proposed model is organic farming. The great and growing appreciation expressed by European citizens for organic farming, moreover, testifies to the desire to have healthy food free from dangerous substances, protecting natural resources, biodiversity, and local specialties.
It remains to be clarified whether this model can meet the challenges of population growth, life expectancy, and global consumption levels. Whether it is therefore possible to increase agricultural productivity without resorting to GMOs and abandoning petrochemicals, while ensuring respect for labor and social inclusion.
Doubling organic land by 2020
According to Legambiente, there is no doubt: “Organic farming, in its various forms, appears to be the most suitable model to meet these demands. And this is what millions of farmers around the world are already practicing, starting with the Territory Ambassadors that Legambiente has identified in its journey across the peninsula with the Green Train and presents in Milan.” For this reason, the environmental association launches the progetto Conversione, why the extension of Italian organic soils will double by 2020.
The conference takes place at the Civic Aquarium, in viale G. B. Gadio 2, Milan.
