New evidence on extra virgin

Regular consumption of olive oil promotes memory and brain health. Confirmation of the beneficial role of polyphenols, natural compounds of which olive oil is very rich, comes from a study conducted by the Institute of Cellular Biology and Neurobiology of the Italian Cnr and published in Nutrition.

In the experiment by Italian researchers, the mechanism of action of olive oil polyphenols on the neurological functions of mammals is revealed. The beneficial substances, administered to the mice, produced an increase in two growth factors (Ngf and Bdnf) of neuronal cells in brain areas involved in learning and memory.

The scientific evidence from Cnr complements the extensive literature on the benefits of olive oil, also indicated as an effective anti-inflammatory in colitis. It is also useful to recall nutritionists' recommendation to consume two tablespoons a day of raw extra virgin olive oil.
