Italy is the world's leading wine producer. 2015 ended with a 10% increase in production, reaching 48.9 million hectoliters.
The Italian primacy is reported by the OIV, International Organisation of Vine and Wine, according to which it is now certain that Italy has surpassed France, which remains at 47.4 million hectoliters, unchanged since 2014.
On the podium of the world's largest wine producers, Spain occupies third place, with a production of 36.7 million hectoliters (+4% over 2014).
The rise of Chile
Along the ranking, the US wine production remains substantially stable, increasing by 1% to 22.14 million hectoliters, while Chile's rise continues, with production jumping 23%, reaching 12.8 million hectoliters. Argentina remains outside the top five, losing 23% of production. The situation remains unchanged for other major wine producers like New Zealand and Australia, which instead gain significant advantage in the Chinese market. (LINK)
Italy in China
Italy's primacy as a world producer revives the urgency to improve performance on the global market, especially in high-potential markets like China. Here Italy ranks fifth among the main wine suppliers and has significant room for improvement, considering the growing ability of Chinese consumers to appreciate good quality wines.
The trend appears encouraging. According to Ismea-Uiv estimates, in the first 9 months of 2015, Italian wine exports to China grew by 42% in volume and 60% in value, for an overall business volume estimated at 1.3 billion euros.
