Susumaniello, the rediscovery
Susumaniello, synonym of the new enological Apulia, is a red wine rediscovered from an indigenous grape variety or at least having become so over the centuries. Known to a lesser extent compared to Primitivo or Negroamaro, the little-known Susumaniello wine is experiencing a season of renewed importance among enthusiasts, thanks also to research that leads more and more wineries to enhance the oldest cultivars, anchored to a past of low-income agriculture and large quantities, through pure vinification.
Susumaniello rhymes with “somarello” and it seems that its strange name comes from this assonance. This type of vine, Susumaniello, is so productive in the first years that it appears overloaded beyond any limit, like the proverbial pack donkey, and the wine produced is also known as “Sumariello nero”.
Red wine used for blending in past decades, interest in the excellent Susumaniello wine has revived after discovering a high concentration of extracts in the berries and good fixed acidity. The bunch is medium-sized, pyramidal, often compound and elongated. On the palate Susumaniello is dry, warm and soft, intense and persistent, with a return of cherry and plum fruitiness.
