Italian dark chocolate is a strategic asset of the national agri-food sector. With exports reaching 2.883 billion euros - an increase of +17,2% compared to 2023 – the segment demonstrates a commercial penetration capacity based on a distinctive lever: perceived quality.
According to data Eurostat, Italy ranks fifth among EU countries for extra-community chocolate exports, with 92,000 tons shipped in 2023, equal to 11% of the total community. Ahead are Germany (221,000 t, 26%), the Netherlands (123,000 t, 14%), Poland (115,000 t, 13%) and Belgium (96,000 t, 11%). The data, while placing Italy close to the large volumes of Central-Northern Europe, takes on a different meaning if read alongside the unit value: the double-digit growth in turnover despite substantially stable quantities signals a clear qualitative upgrading of the offer.
From a technological point of view, the prevailing production model is that of bean-to-bar, which allows Italian companies – many of which are medium-small and highly specialized – to control the entire supply chain, from the selection of cocoa beans to the finished bar. This approach guarantees not only traceability and distinctive aromatic profiles but also feeds the positioning Premium that distinguishes Italian chocolate worldwide.
The global scenario supports this strategy. The dark chocolate market, estimated at 63.65 billion dollars in 2026, is expected to reach 129.58 billion by 2035, with a CAGR of 8.22%. Regional dynamics are clear: the United States (20.45 billion USD in 2025), theEurope (15.25 billion) and China (14.53 billion) absorb increasing volumes of product, increasingly attentive to the health and functional component as well as the pleasure of taste.
In this context, Made in Italy chocolate plays on a double register: on one side thegastronomic hedonism, on the other hand thefunctional food, subject of scientific studies that enhance its polyphenols and nutritional profile. A combination that, if supported by adequate promotion and origin protection policies, can further consolidate Italy's leadership in the high-end segment.
