Strawberry jam, sublime gem
The strawberry jam is a basic element of the Italian table: if strawberries were already appreciated by the Romans (who gave them a mythological origin), jam began to appear on all kinds of tables in the Italian peninsula starting from the Renaissance.
Its history speaks of a continuous rise in Italian taste, able to surpass fashions and artistic movements. Futurism itself, a cultural and artistic movement able to revolutionize Europe at the beginning of the 1900s, bends to exalt it among the different types of jam, making it the protagonist of a dessert included by Filippo Marinetti (1876-1944) in the Futurist Cooking Manifesto, called “Like a cloud” and composed of waffle of wild berries, whipped cream, strawberry jam, and orange juice.
This Italian jam is excellent to be spread on slices of toasted bread in the morning, or blended with other ingredients of traditional desserts, from authentic tart to small pastries. It pairs perfectly with some types of soft or semi-cooked cheeses, delighting the palate by combining with Asiago, Murazzano and Robiola d’Alba, three typical products of Veneto and Piedmont, main fruit harvesting areas, together with the Apennine regions.
