Historical roots: from the myth of Diomedes to the ampelographic cataloging
The Black of Troy, also known as Troia Grape, is the third most widespread native black grape variety in Puglia, with an estimated surface area of approximately 2,500 hectares. The most fascinating legend attributes its introduction to Diomedes, Greek hero who, after the Trojan War, sailed up the Ofanto river and landed on the Gargano coast. According to tradition, the hero anchored the ship with stones from the walls of Troy and marked the boundaries of the gods with them Diomedei fields, planting vine shoots from the ancient city of Ilium. Vestiges of these megalithic works are still visible in the area between Barletta and Canosa, in the famous Menhir of Cannae.
Beyond the myth, ampelographic and genetic studies confirm that Nero di Troia belongs to a varietal group from the eastern Adriatic, which subsequently adapted excellently to limestone soils of northern Puglia. The vine was particularly appreciated at the court of Frederick II of Swabia, who in the 11th century cultivated and tasted the 'full-bodied wine of Troy' on his Apulian estates, giving the wine an aristocratic character.
In the 1533, i marquises D'Avalos, after the acquisition of the city of Troy, significantly encouraged the cultivation of the vine, recognizing its extraordinary potential and excellent adaptation pedoclimatic of the area.
The first official cataloging dates back to the Ampelographic Bulletin of 1875, edited by Domenico Froio, who attested to its diffusion between Barletta, Andria, Corato and Trani. In 1877, Giuseppe Di Rovasenda published the first organic description in the 'Essay of universal ampelography', indicating theTroia Grape in the area of Trani as Nero di Troia and, in Bari, as Uva di Troja or di Canosa. Already in 1854, experimental plantations of Uva di Troia were registered in Capitanata, described as ‘robust variety, drought-resistant and quite productive'. In 1895, the wine received awards at the wine exhibition in Milan, followed in 1910 by the award tointernational agricultural expo of Buenos Aires, marking the beginning of the international prestige that continues to this day.
The DOCG Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva regulations
Grape variety and ampelographic composition
The Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva DOCG must be obtained from grapes produced with the following ampelographic composition: Minimum 90% Nero di Troia. May contribute, alone or jointly, up to a maximum of 10%, also the grapes of other grape varieties with non-aromatic black berries, suitable for cultivation in the Apulia region for the homogeneous production area ‘Central Murgia‘.
Production area
The production area includes the municipal territory of Minervino Murge and partly the municipal territories of Andria, Corato, Trani, Ruvo di Puglia, Terlizzi, Bitonto, Palo del Colle and Toritto, completely the administrative island D’Ameli of the municipality of Binetto, in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani and Bari. The area takes its name from the famous Federiciano castle now a UNESCO heritage siteUNESCO and is partially included in the Alta Murgia Natural Park, one of the three ‘homogeneous wine-growing basins’ identified by the Apulia Region.
The lithology of the area consists of compact limestones of the general unit of Cretaceous limestone of Bari and Altamura. The soil type has modest depth and high stony and rocky conditions, with excellent solar exposure and ideal characteristics for quality wine production. The climate is typically sub-Mediterranean, with strong temperature variations between day and night that favor aromatic and phenolic concentration.
Agronomic practices
The production maximum of grapes is limited to 10 tons per hectare, to ensure concentration and quality. The grape yield to wine must not exceed 70 hectoliters per hectare: if these parameters are exceeded within the 5% limit, the excess does not have the right to DOCG, beyond this limit the right to the denomination for the entire product is lost. Traditional and modern low-vigor training systems are favored, with increasing spread of practices organic and sustainable, in response to environmental and market needs.
Vinification and aging: the rules for the Reserve designation
The type Reserve provides for a minimum period of mandatory aging By at least 24 months (two years), of which at least 12 months in wood (one year in oak barrels), starting from November 1st of the year of grape production. The winemaking aims to extract phenolic structure and aromatic complexity, with prolonged macerations and wood aging that enhance the natural austerity of the grape variety and soften its characteristic tannins.
Physico-chemical and organoleptic characteristics
The wine presents the following characteristics at the time of release for consumption:
- color: from intense ruby red to garnet red with aging;
- odor: characteristic, fine, with complex aromas of ripe black fruits (plum, blackberry, cherry), spices (licorice, black pepper), balsamic notes, and hints of tobacco, cocoa, and vanilla conferred by aging;
- taste: dry, full-bodied, harmonious, structured, tannic but balanced;
- alcohol content total volume minimum: 13.00% vol;
- minimum total acidity: 4.5 g/l;
- minimum non-reducing extract: 26.0 g/l;
- residual reducing sugar not exceeding 10.0 g/l.
The wine exhibits marked aging potential over time, with elegant tannins and a long, persistent finish. The presence of tannins and acidity predisposes the wine to long aging, which bring out complex tertiary aromas.
Labeling, traceability and controls
Thelabel must mandatorily bear the mention DOCG, the type Reserve and thevintage. The addition of any qualification different from those provided by the regulation, including the adjectives 'extra', 'fine', 'selected', is prohibited, except for references to names, company names, and private brands without laudatory meaning. The use of geographical indications and toponomastic indications referring to municipalities, hamlets, areas, farms, and localities within the delimited zone, from which the grapes actually come. The mention 'vineyard‘ followed by the relevant place name is allowed.
Thebottling must be carried out in the defined geographical area to safeguard quality, reputation, guarantee origin, and ensure controls. supply chain controls, chemical-physical analyses and organoleptic evaluations by the authorized body Valoritalia, ensuring complete traceability from the vineyard to the bottle.
