To prepare a good Italian espresso coffee, the blend and roasting are fundamental, but at the bar counter, what counts are the machine and the bartender's expertise in using it. The global market for professional coffee machines – and, obviously, cappuccino – is worth 650 million euros. The sales leader is an Italian company, the Cimbali Group. The company, born in Milan in 1912 from a workshop repairing copper, also owns the brands Faema, Casadio, and Hemerson. It exports about 70% of its production to over 100countries (with the highest demand from Germany and Great Britain) through a network of 700 direct distributors. The first patent for professional coffee machines dates back to 1884, but it is only from the beginning of the twentieth century that it can be considered a true industry. After the war, it took off: coffee machines became very popular in bars across the Peninsula, accompanying the expansion of consumption during the economic boom. Faema, founded in 1945, is the symbol brand of this phase and began a competition with Cimbali in the domestic market that lasted until 1995, whenthey decided to join forces to bring this national industrial excellence to the world.
