Aglianico wine

Aglianico wine, red from Vulture

The Aglianico wine is the red of Southern Italy. The Vulture DOCG comes from vineyards around Potenza in Basilicata, a splendid region nestled between Puglia and Calabria. It is garnet ruby in color with a winey aroma and a hint of strawberry; on the palate it is dry and harmonious.

Besides the Aglianico del Vulture wine, the Campania IGT stands out, a wine made entirely from Aglianico grapes. Perfumed with cocoa, tobacco, and fresh fruit, it is perfect for barbecues, as well as with typical southern pasta recipes, such as tuna ragù. Another controlled and guaranteed designation of origin is thel Taburno, which completes the range of Aglianico wine. With a red variety (minimum 85% Aglianico grape) that has a dry taste, it is ideal with roasted meats. There is also a Riserva version, which retains in taste a delicate memory of aging in wooden barrels. It is also appreciated in the rosé variant, a happy choice during meals or to accompany dessert. The red from Vulture isexcellent together with roasted meats.

The grapevine that gives life to this renowned red wine arrived in Italy with the Greeks, who called it Hellenica. The Romans renamed it Ellenico and used it to improve Falerno, much loved by the poets of the time. In the 15th century, the Aragonese gave it the name Aglianico wine, which it still retains.
