Il codice a barre è una sorta di carta di identità dei prodotti, che dà la possibilità di identificarli automaticamente in tutti i passagi della catena di distribuzione (imballaggio, logistica, immagazzinamento nelle sedi aziendali) ed è utilizzata in oltre 110 paesi al mondo.
