canned tuna
Canned tuna, sustainability goal
The canned tuna confirms itself as a protagonist among canned fish, a sector where the trend towards production processes based on sustainability, from fishing to the table, is increasingly established. The sector analysis, carried out by our media partner DM, essentially highlights the stability of the Italian market.
At the end of 2012, sales of packaged fish were stable in volume (+0.1%) against a significant growth in value (+3.6%). Tuna's dominance remains strong, with a share of over 75% of the quantities traded. Increasingly, Italian consumers reward companies that achieve results in terms of ecosystem respect with their purchases.
ASdoMAR was a pioneer, also leading Greenpeace's special ranking on canned fish because it applies a series of rigorous criteria such as using striped bonito caught in a way to avoid the accidental capture of other species and choosing only yellowfin specimens longer than 1 meter, to reduce the impact on reproductive cycles. Following the packaged seafood company, other brands like Mareblu, Nostromo, and Riomare have also started to follow at least the first of the principlesdescribed.
