The VIVA Project

Data collected thanks to the efforts of the VIVA project for sustainable wine-making are currently being analysed. The initiative, launched by Italy’s Ministry for the Environment in 2011, included the participation of nine of the country’s largest wine producers (F.lli Gancia & Co., Masi Agricola, Marchesi Antinori, Mastroberardino, Michele Chiarlo, Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio, Planeta, Tasca d’Almerita and Venica&Venica) and set the objective of allowing the companies to measure the environmental impact of their production processes in line with uniform standards studied specifically for the wine industry. Research is being carried out with valuable contributions from research projects such as Agroinnova and Opera, and will include the possibility for companies to adopt a label certified by the Ministry for the Environment with easy-to-understand information on green issues like the carbon footprints for the life cycle of each of the wines.
