More Food for Hungry People

The non-profit organisation Banco Alimentare has sealed an agreement with Italy’s large-scale distribution leader Number 1 to make logistics more efficient, cut transport costs and increase volumes of food distributed in the charity structures the NGO manages. Reported in an article published by GIFT media partner Distribuzione Moderna, the partnership envisages that the company will supply transportation services of food surpluses donated by institutions (such as the European Union), food and agriculture companies, mass market distribution, as well as restaurants to the network of Banco Alimentare’s 8,818 structures assisting nearly 1.8 million poor people throughout Italy. In 2012 BA recovered 61,552 tonnes of food, much of which came from the EU through the National Agency for Agricultural Distribution.
