Fruit juices, recognize them by reading the labels
The different fruit juices are distinguished from Labels. The Italian legislation dictates clear rules, and gives each variant a specific name.
Based on the amount of fruit, juices can be classified into two groups.
• 100% fruit juices. The labels speak for themselves: they contain only fruit, without the addition of water, sugar or anything else. The formula applies to two versions: juice and concentrate juices.
• Fruit drinks. They also consist of water, sugar or other sweeteners, flavors and additives (thickeners, antioxidants, acidifiers). Two products fall into the category:
- Nectar. The percentage of fruit varies from 25% of banana juices to 50% of apple and pear juices. Sugar or other sweeteners are allowed up to 20% of the finished product. Fruit is present in the form of juices, even concentrates, or pulp in puree. Detail specified in the labels.
- Juice and pulp. These differ from nectars only because the fruit is exclusively present as pulp in puree.
