GI’s, Italy is the world leader

Italy confirms the primacy on PDO’s and PGI’s. Data from Ismea-Qualivita

Italy’s world record is strengthened by the number of PDO’s and PGI’s agri-food products, with 818 Geographical Indications (GI’s) registered by the European Union. Both production and export are increasing. Grana PadanoParmigiano Reggiano, prosecco. The myths of Made in Italy foods in the world are confirmed as the unstoppable champions, states the XI Ismea-Qualivita Report on Italian PDO’s, PGI’s and TSG’s productions (2016 consolidated data). A valuable heritage that by now represents the 11% of the food industry sales and the 22% of the agri-food export.

It is a pity that the Italian governments of the past years, instead of protecting our treasures, has legitimized the forgery. In both the agreements between the EU, on a side, Canada (CETA) and Japan on the other. Under the complicit silence of the 264 Protection Association (Consorzio di Tutela) recognized by the Italian MoA.

Certified Made in Italy foods, the numbers

According to official surveys the certified Italian food and agricultural sector – food and wine – has accomplished a record achievement in production (worth €14.8 billions) and export (€8.4 billions). National consumption is also doing well, hauled by retailers’ sales that show a 5,6% increase in certified foods and 1,8% in wines sales.

10 thousand checks per year, by public authorities and Consortia (protection associations). To ensure the integrity of the supply chains and the certified products. And to dismantle frauds before they can cause damage to the reputation of the protected names, thanks to the NAS (Italian Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit, Carabinieri) investigation activities.

The PDO’s and PGI’s food chart

Italian PDO’s and PGI’s are performing well, much better than the country’s economy. The food sector is worth 6.6 billion of euro in production and 13.6 billions in consumption, with a 3% increase on 2015. Sales in mass distribution circuits have increased by 5.6% for the second consecutive year. And export keeps on growing (+4.4%).  Even the number of operators committed to certified productions registers a 5% rise over 2015, up to 83,695.
The province that gives the biggest contribution is Parma, with a production that is worth 1.45 billion euro (+28%).
