Parmigiano Reggiano export volumes continue to see growth. In the last 7 years, sales outside of Italy have more than doubled and with 2013’s +5% make up 34% of national production. These levels will surely increase due to a communication strategy aimed at conveying the superior quality of true Parmigiano Reggiano, as well as unmasking the fraud behind “Italian sounding” imitations.
Exports have contributed to the positive balance for 2013 with the producers’ association reporting success in overcoming the serious problems caused by the 2012 Emilia Romagna earthquake, which provoked damage worth some 100 million euros. The wave of solidarity after the calamity transformed into the direct sale of damaged cheese rounds. This shifted a significant part of domestic movement from large-scale distribution (-1%) to the producers themselves (+20%).
Prices, after a brief period of oscillation, also began to inch upward again. With supplies down, at the beginning of 2014 quotations returned to Euro 9.40/kg.
