Quality and sustainability embrace one another in Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco. This wine from the Veneto region is a global protagonist for the Italian-style aperitivo, as well as the center of innovative procedures to find valuable uses for production by-products.
The project looks to recover value from pruning residues, channeling them into virtuous processes like biomass electricity generation. The same can be said for processing the pulp left over after pressing. After treatments to remove parasites and phytochemicals, the wet waste from winemaking can be transformed into high quality compost that can be reused in the same vineyards.
The PRO.S.E.C.C.O. project (Sustainable Energy Production from Compost Combustion) is financed by the Region of Veneto with collaboration from the University of Padova and the consortium that safeguards Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, in addition to the cooperative of local Prosecco producers to bring sustainability center stage.
