Avoiding saturated fats and increasing intake of unsaturated fatty acids like omega-3 benefits neurological functions. In short, the Mediterranean diet will save your memory.
The findings emerge from research published in the scientific journal Neurology, the official magazine of the American Association of Neurologists. Researchers followed 17,478 Americans over the age of 64 to ensure the observance of a Mediterranean diet and its effects on memory and cognitive functions.
The data collected highlights that in healthy people who rigorously stick to Mediterranean food, the risk of developing neurological diseases decreases by 19% compared to those who eat more haphazardly. The advantages of the diet are that it is based around foods containing omega-3, as well as very reduced levels of saturated fat, meats and dairy products.
