The first cargo loads of Italian pears and apples will depart for the United States by the end of the month. The opening of imports to America arrived following the signing of the operative plan by the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the certificate released by the Central Phytosanitary Service of Italy’s Ministry of Agricultural Policy.
The agreement is the result of intense verification and control activities with US authorities that involved a number of Italian producers together with the associations that represent them, finally leading to a point of entry into this important market. More inspections will take place over the next two weeks after the containers of apples and pears arrive on US soil.
Italy is one of the world’s largest apple exporters, and the top one in the EU. To present, 90% of exports went to European countries. China, which alone accounts for 40% of world production, also boasts the title of top exporter, followed by Italy and the United States.
