SOStain, the project for sustainable wine production, is calling together Sicily’s winemaking companies. The initiative was launched in 2010 by wine producers Tasca d’Almerita and Planeta, who were the first to put it into practice. Now they are extending the invitation to all of the island’s winemakers. SOStain is organised as a path that reaches different levels. At first, each company must analyse its point of departure and identify critical issues. After this, they define sustainable objectives together with the actions to be taken to improve their relationship to the environment, territory and locals. The universities Sacro Cuore in Piacenza and the University of Milan are following the technical aspects involved. Sustainable management in winemaking revolves around the correct use of resources: water, soil, air, technology and energy, as well as human. Tasca d’Almerita’s Regaleali label says it all: “trying to meet nature’s needs, we produce this wine, fruit of the land and the people who work with us.”
