Direct sales works in France, but in Italy zero km is an effective slogan for initiatives that in the end have had little impact on everyday real world buying habits. On the other side of the Alps, associations dedicated to boosting agriculture in the countryside (AMAP) sell fruit and vegetables to buying groups whose members can even meet with the producers themselves. They sign six-month contracts, the buyer pays in advance and the farmer commits to delivering a basket full of orchard bounty every week. Prices vary according to the size of the delivery.
