Business volumes for the Italian tea and infusion industry, including herbal varieties like chamomile, reached an overall value of 246 million euros in Italy. The positive trend has remained intact throughout 2013, growing 3.2% in value and 1.9% in volume. Increased sales, highlighted by a report in Distribuzione Moderna, have been most marked in the “premium” and “best price” categories.
Consumer attention to physical and mental wellbeing is the primary factor for the market. The tea sector taken as a whole (including classic, decaffeinated, as well as green, fruit-based and white teas) has dominated to date with a volume worth 133 million euros and a growth trend continuing in the future. Herbal tea and infusions have also performed dynamically with sustained growth annually.
The Italian tea tradition is an important player in the phenomenon, with continued success for historic brands like Bonomelli and l’Angelica.
