Glass is the best for preserving high quality Italian tomatoes. The superiority of preserving tomatoes using this material was confirmed by research carried out at Piemonte Orientale University presented on January 22, 2014 in Rome as a part of the Assovetro annual conference.
The study analyzed the impact of packaging on the chemical and physical characteristics of Italian tomato sauce. Comparing products stored in cans, cartons and glass, researchers highlighted that the latter offers more complete protection for the vitamins and antioxidant nutrients naturally present in tomatoes, compared to other types of containers.
Choosing glass for preserving foods is synonymous with better overall quality for consumers. Pushed by demand, Italian glass bottle and food container production in the first 10 months of 2013 increased by 3%.
