On the Request of the Scientific Community

The presence of the glycemic index on food labels could make a significant contribution in the fight against diabetes and obesity. The fact was affirmed by the nutrition experts who gathered in June in Stresa for an international summit. The index is essential in distinguishing the quality of carbohydrates from a nutrition and dietary perspective. Researchers and clinicians from ten nations on three continents confirmed the scientific validity of the evidence showing the correlation between a diet with a low glycemic index and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, and coronary disease, not to mention controlling glycemic levels in diabetics, and help keeping people’s weight under control.
In their final declaration, the scientists recommended the inclusion of the glycemic index as a part of both the national food guidelines, as well as on the nutritional tables on product labels. European legislation, however, needs to update the list of nutrition claims acknowledged by the EU.
