“Parmigiano Reggiano will finally be completely protected in the territory of the Russian Federation, both in the interests of the producers, and the consumers present in the area.” This is how the director of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium, Riccardo Deserti, commented on the decision of the Russian government to allow for the registration of the famous cheese’s name as a designation of origin throughout the country’s borders. His comments were featured in an article published by Distribuzione Moderna.
“In the Russian Federation,” Deserti explained, “the rules on geographic designations are a part of the Civil Code, in which themes regarding intellectual property are treated in all of their forms. In this way, the consortium will be able to act in order to impede the incorrect reference to ‘Parmigiano Reggiano’ within the framework of protection that is provided for.”
“This result,” Deserti continued, “is particularly important in light of the rapid economic growth Russia is experiencing, where the possibility of increasing our exports is paradoxically marked by the numerous phenomena of counterfeiting and usurpation we have intercepted in recent months.”
