In 2012 Italian sparkling wine created a business volume worth 2.5 billion euros, 19.1% higher compared to the year before. The data came directly from Ovse, Italy’s “bubble wine” observatory, showing that Italy is the world leader in exports for this type of product, covering all varieties from prosecco to more standard sparkling wines. Italy exports primarily to the rest of Europe (54% of export volume, +3.7% on 2011) often at the expense of its “nobler” French cousin champagne, with Germany and Great Britain as major markets offering solid prospects in the long term. As for countries outside the EU, sales in the United States are continuing to rise steadily, while Russia, Japan and South Korea are showing the most growth in turnover.
