A new list of food additives

The EU has published a new list of safe food additives, which will be effective from June 1st 2013. The main advantage of the table containing only substances that have been scientifically proven as safe is transparency for consumers. The items are listed in a clear manner in line with the food categories to which they can be added. Food additives are used as preservatives, as well as for colouring and sweetening. According to European regulations they can only be authorised for consumption after rigorous analysis into their impact on health, and whether they are misleading to shoppers on product labels. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is also carrying out a fresh large-scale evaluation which is set to finish in 2020 to make sure that the list continues to stay up to date. There is also an online database which can be consulted easily.
