A New Food System

Malnutrition takes on different shapes. 2 billion people are afflicted by the lack of sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals that leads to rickets, a life-sentence for some 165 million children under the age of 5. At the extreme opposite end, 1.4 billion human beings are either overweight or obese, as a result of which they are exposed to the risks of serious disease. This is the paradox of the global food imbalance highlighted by FAO during World Food Day on October 16, 2013, with the motto “Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems”.

The day is divided into numerous events in an attempt to explore the causes of the phenomenon and identify possible remedies. Conventions and workshops have been scheduled in Milan, Rome and Naples as a part of the international salon for research, innovation and food security, and is in the orbit of the central theme of Expo 2015, food safety and food security.

The GROW campaign promoted by OXFAM is also along the same lines as the FAO event, focusing on issues such as food sovereignty, industry sustainability practices in production and distribution, as well as reducing waste.
