Organic agriculture against global warming

Organic agriculture and global warming. The balance between the relation of issued and “saved” gases is positive, useful for reaching aims set by Cop21 in Paris. All the more reason to accelerate conversion to organic, already underway in Italy. This emerges from the conference “Organic Agriculture: Global response to global warming” organised by Federbio and Kyoto Club at Sana 2016.

Together with breeding, for Fao, agriculture produces 5.3 billion tonnes of CO2, equal to 14.6% of fossil source total (7% in Belpaese). At the same time, organic agriculture itself – using 45% less energy than conventional – can mitigate planet warming, thanks to plants’ photosynthesis activities, optimised by agriculture practice that cuts greenhouse gas, produces bioenergy and captures carbon in soil and biomass. Activities like better land management, rice fields (methane source), zootechnics, irrigation, typical properties of organic and biodynamic agriculture.
