Nutrition for the elderly at Milan Expo 2015
Which nutrition improves the welfare of the elderly? It is the question answered by the conference that takes place on Monday, August 3, 2015, in Milan, in Piazza della Scienza. Organized by the University of Milan -Bicocca under the list of initiatives promoted for Expo 2015, the event brings together numerous experts.
“The nutritional needs of the healthy and fragile elderly” – the title – is a very significant issue in many western countries. In 2014 the percentage of elderly people (conventionally considered as such after 65 years) reached 21% in Italy and Germany, 15% in the USA, 25% in Japan. And these figures will most likely grow.
In this scenario it is urgent to raise the attention on nutrition for the elderly, to prevent the onset or escalation of chronic illnesses linked to diet and lifestyle, such as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer.
To explore and discuss these topics, the symposium is divided into four sections:
- compliance with the food preferences and tastes of the over 60;
- medical aspects;
- “bad” nutrition in the elderly population;
- eating in isolation.
