Infant formula is the world’s best selling functional food. According to Euromonitor International, increased sales for these products reached a value of 3.63bln euros in 2013, followed by energy drinks (2.54bln), yogurt, both pre and probiotics (1.74bln), and mineral water (1.45bln). The report issued by the consulting firm focused on foods connected to wellness and health (including the organic food sector), valuing a total of 35bln.
The strongest demand for infant formula comes from Asia, particularly China. Forecasts point to an enduring tendency with strong consumer interest for products enriched with Omega-3 and prebiotics. Other promising markets were Africa and the Middle East.
Intense growth in demand for alternatives to fresh milk with ingredients like rice, oats, hemp and walnuts was also noted.
