Cantucci Toscani IGP, beware of imitations
Tuscan Cantucci IGP. The fight against counterfeiting of the best Made in Italy has a new arrow in its bow, with the European recognition of the PGI (Protected Designation of Origin) awarded in January 2016 to Tuscan Cantuccini or Tuscan Cantucci.
The biscuits are famous all over the world: exports are equal to 37% of the volumes produced and the total turnover is estimated at 35 million euros. The "real" Cantucci are made according to a specification that dictates stringent quality rules: whole sweet almonds, a characterizing ingredient, must represent at least 20% of the product and be accompanied, together with honey and eggs, by butter, which can never be replaced with margarine.
The request for the IGP was presented in 2011 by Assocantuccini which has 16 Tuscan companies, both artisan and industrial.
With Cantucci or Cantuccini, the Tuscany region reaches 29 products registered as PGI.
