Top Wines in Foreign Markets

Exports is where Italian wine production has perhaps its greatest potential. Confirmation of this fact came from the series of data presented at Vinitaly, the most important exhibition for Italy’s wine sector, held in Verona from April 7 to 10 with over 4,000 exhibitors from 23 countries and some 2,500 accredited journalists. Many sector operators placed due emphasis on exporting Italian wine. The sectors turnover reached 9 billion euros in 2012 with particular growth, +6% on 2011, for wines leaving the peninsula. Denominazione di Origine Protetta, DOC and DOCG wines continued to lead in foreign markets with an increase of 8% in value. Employment opportunities in the industry were also up, thanks to the solid export performance. According to statistics released during Vinitaly, 1 million 250 thousand people were employed at Italian wine-making companies last year, 3% higher than the preceding 12 months.
