Reduce Emissions Across the Sector

Food production generates huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to aggravating the effects of climate change. In developing countries, extreme weather events like droughts or floods impact on farmers more, and these phenomena are increasing in frequency. The effects are especially significant for agricultural production for many areas of the planet. According to Oxfam estimates, by the year 2050 the number of people at risk of starvation globally will increase by 10 to 20% as a direct consequence. For this reason it is important for food production companies to commit to reducing emissions, focusing on sustainability and adopting policies which help their suppliers to adapt to climate change. The Oxfam report Climate Change Risks and Supply Chain Responsibility highlights what to do to encourage adapting farming to the current impact of the changing climate.
