Probiotics Weight, Research Highlights Connection

Probiotics can also influence body weight. This hypothesis emerges from an analysis published in the journal Microb Pathog, which evaluates the role of some strains of Lactobacillus. Researchers examined findings from 82 studies carried out on animals, people and in labs. It was shown that some species of Lactobacillus (L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, L. ingluviei) favor weight gain, while others (L. plantarum, L. gasseri) are associated with weight loss.

Probiotics have been added to livestock and animal feed in the European Union since 2006 as a substitute for antibiotics, which are prohibited in disease prevention or to increase mass. The result is that these micro-organisms have demonstrated an astounding capacity to alleviate digestive disorders and increase size.

The effects of probiotics in fighting obesity in humans are less certain, but the field holds enormous promise.
