Not to Mention Compostable

The new Compost Label, the bio-label for fresh produce developed by Italy’s Polycart, can be thrown away with organic rubbish because it is both biodegradable and compostable. The adhesive is made out of Mater-Bi, a bio-plastic produced by Novamont, and printed with inks that have also been tested for disposal in composting.

Born of a project started in 2009, the Compost Label is also ideal for other applications in the produce sector, beginning with large-scale distribution, where it could be used in digital scales, as well as combined with biodegradable bags that bulk items are sold in.

The Compost Label was created through collaboration with experts from Italy’s Ministry for the Environment, as a part of a high profile initiative promoted to strengthen the environmental credentials of the Italian retail sector. The new bio-label scheme was presented to fresh produce producers during the Fruit Logistica event in Berlin, and another sector meeting in the Italian city of Udine.
