Italian cheese was gorged upon at the World Cheese Awards, held in the British city of Birmingham at the end of November 2013. Masterpieces like Gorgonzola, Ovricaprino, Caciocavallo and Roccolo achieved the coveted Super Gold, the highest recognition at the international exhibition of cheese-making excellence.
An additional 14 gold medals of the 152 total that were awarded went to yet other Italian cheeses, including Grana Padano, five types of Parmigiano Reggiano, Mozzarella Fior di Latte, Taleggio DOP, a sweet Gorgonzola, Gran Castelli, Ricotta, Montasio Vecchio DOP and an interesting Buffalo Blue.
For more than twenty years, the event has been one of the most widely known and important regular cheese competitions at the global level. 2013 was non exception, with more than 2,700 cheeses from 30 countries were included in the selection to decide which were in fact the highest achievements in the art.
