ESSNA Provides a Nutritional Definition

About Sports Nutrition is a guide to foods that are specifically intended for athletes published on the website of the European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance (ESSNA), an organization which represents Europe’s athletic food producers, including the Italian leader Enervit.

In Europe, foods that are particularly indicated for athletes are subject laws that are found nowhere else in the world. They are stricter in defining the effective nutritional needs linked to each form of training and exercise in order to guarantee high safety standards, and an adequate nutritional profile. Attention is also placed on not blurring the lines with pharmaceutical drugs, as occurs in many other parts of the planet.

The ESSNA article describes the primary ingredients in sports food, the rigid EU rules that govern them, as well as scientific research, developed through the contribution of extensive studies and trials with practicing athletes and teams, both amateur and professional, from a number of disciplines. The goal, declared ESSNA president Adam Carey, is “to supply policy makers and public opinion with the necessary information to correct the false ideas that surround athletic nutrition.”
