An International Bestseller

Parma ham has obtained record results in international markets, with exports growing by 10% in 2012, a sum which makes it the best-selling Italian deli product abroad. According to data released by the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma, the body that governs its production, Parma DOP was worth some 232 million euros, with exports accounting for some 28% of total earnings, much higher than the 19% ratio seen in the overall food and agriculture sector. The primary market for exports is the USA, while Australia and Japan continue to show promise. In the EU, marked performance was noted in Germany, where exports rose 14%, and the Netherlands. According to consortium chairman Paolo Tanara these results “are giving us the impetus to face the crisis in internal demand.”
